July 17, 2014: Typical of Southern California, it was an absolutely gorgeous morning. Light clouds keeping the sun away, a nice (but not too cool) breeze giving just the right amount of levity to the 75 degree heat and excitement palpable in the air.
Then, right as the ceremony was starting, the sun burst forth in all its glory, shining a light down on the Train Station in Town Square. The Dapper Dans emerged and started a sing-along with a rousing rendition of "Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room." Most people joined in with "Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me" and dropped out when the Dapper Dans sang "Miracles From Molecules." Who knows that song? Show of hands!
After the Dapper Dans concluded their 6-minute sing-along, dozens of Disney characters paraded out in front of the Train Station. Princesses! Mice! Thumper! Villains! All out in force to wish Disneyland a Happy 59th Birthday.
The Dapper Dans then urged us all to sing "Happy Birthday to Disneyland" and we thought the ceremony was over.
Nope! Michael Colglazier, president, Disneyland Resort stood up and announced: “It’s an incredible time at the Disneyland Resort as we prepare for next year’s Diamond Celebration. We’re excited to honor our rich history, to celebrate the incredible magic that fills our resort today, and to create unforgettable memories with our guests for many years to come.”
With that, Disneyland dropped the 59th Anniversary Banner and revealed the diamond-studded logo for Disneyland's 60th Anniversary Celebration in 2015:
I don't know about you, but I love it!
Colglazier went on to explain the #Disneyland60Contest. They have invited fans to submit photos from six decades of Disneyland history via Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #Disneyland60Contest to enter to win a trip to the park. (Full contest details here.)
