A congressman in Peru has proposed the construction of a Walt Disney World replica in the mountain city of Cusco, a report says.
Sergio Davila said such a park would complement the city’s other tourism draws, such as archaelogy, history and ancestry, according to Gestion, an economic website in Peru.
The project could cost $1 billion if it were to become reality, according Bureau of Conventions president Carlos Canales told Gestion — and it also would be a poor fit for Cusco, which is near Incan citadel Macchu Picchu and is more of a niche tourism destination, he said. Weather also could be a problem in Cusco, he said, suggesting a location closer to the capital city of Lima, such as Ica, would be better for a major entertainment theme park.
Few details of Davila’s proposal were reported by Gestion. Davila is a member of the same Peruvians for Change party as Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, which holds just 14 percent of seats in congress.
