Walt Disney World will expand its mobile-ordering program for theme-park restaurants at a handful of locations at Disney’s Animal Kingdom this summer, the company announced.
Disney’s first location that visitors can order food via smartphone is Satu’li Canteen, a counter-service restaurant that will be part of the Pandora — The World of Avatar land when it opens May 27.
Additional locations revealed by the company on Thursday include Pizzafari, Flame Tree Barbecue and Restaurantosaurus. Disney did not share a specific date for those debuts.
Annual passholders who have been previewing Pandora have had the opportunity to try the mobile ordering at Satu’li Canteen using the My Disney Experience app.
Here’s how it works. On the app, tap “order food” and select a restaurant. (Right now, the only option is Satu’li.) Now tap “order food” again. From there you can see the menu and make selections. (You can do this from the far reaches of the park if you want. I just tried it from my desk in downtown Orlando.)
When you arrive at Satu’li Canteen, tap the “I’m here” button. That tells the kitchen to prepare your meal. The app alerts you to pick up the meal at a designated window. Look for the mobile order pick-up sign.
This is a prepay service, so your Disney account will need to be attached to a credit card. (I did this at the same time I made a Satu’li order earlier this week.)
On the bummer side: At this point, if you have dietary restrictions, discounts or dining plans, you’ll have to go the conventional route and place food order with the cashiers.
Officials have said that mobile ordering will expand across Walt Disney World property.
